Kurnool

Tirupati town is quite far away from Hyderabad (704 km) but nearer to Madras and Banglore. It is 150 km from Madras via Kalahasti and 250 km from Bangalore. Tourists can either fly to Tirupati from Madras, Bangalore and Hyderabad or go by road as it has a good network of surface transport facilities.

There are also certain places of interest to the pilgrims in and around Tirupati. Sri Govindaraja Perumal Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is right in the middle of the town.

There is also a Shiva temple at the foot of the hill going to Thirumala, and a pool called Kapila Theertham which is 3 km from Tirupati. There are also shrines of Kothandarama Swamy built by Ramanujacharya in the 12th century and a temple for Padmavatiamman (Consort of Lord Venkatesh-wara) - about 5 km from the city at Tiruchanur. Ahobilam : The Prahlada Varada Laxminarasimha Temple is in lower Ahobilam. The Nava Narasimha shrine, situated on a plateau 2,800 ft above sea level, is approached on foot.

Adoni : The fort, once a strong hold of the Vijayanagar empire, stands in ruins upon the hills. The Jama Masjid in this town is a classic example of Islamic architecture.

Srisailam : Located 80 km away from Kurnool, Srisailam is situated on Rishabgiri Hills. It is situated on the banks of river Krishna. On the south bank of the river, on a 457 metre high hill, is the Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple of this town, is one of the most ancient and sacred places in South India. The hydro-electric project across the River Krishna is an engineering marvel here. Srisailam, he presiding deity, Sri Mallikarjunaswamy, is one of the 12 'Jyotirlingams' in India. A massive fort, with walls 6 metre high encloses the temple. A cluster of minor shrines within the temple enclosures include the 'Sahasra Linga' 'Panchapandava Temples' and 'Vata Vriksha'. At Sikharam, the highest of the Srisailam hills, is Sikhareswara Swamy, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Sri Ganapati Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesh.

Mahanandi : Mahanandi, one of the Nava Nandis in the country, is situated in the thick forests of the Nallamalai hills, Nandyal taluk of Kurnool district.

The car festival of Sri Ajaneyaswami, celebrated for eight days from Margasira Suddha Triodasi during November-December is most important and well attended.

By Air : The nearest airport is at Hyderabad at a distance of 219-km from Kurnool.
