For the fisherman, Uttar Pradesh offers unique opportunities. All the hill streams, down to about 80 miles in the plains, teem with Mahseer, belonging to the carp family. Normally, a bottom feeder, the Mahseer rises easily to the spoon or plug bait.

Mahseer fishing is second to none at the great headwaters and the rapids of the Ganga, Jamuna and Sarda rivers as well as in the rapids of the Ramganga and Kosi rivers. The Mahseer is described as the gamiest fish in the world, as the first rush of the Mahseer is considered even wilder than the first rush of the salmon by those who have experienced fishing of both types. Fish of upto 60 lb. have been caught in the Nainital District in the tributaries of the Ganga - the Kosi and Ramganga. Fishing is best during the months of September to November and from mid February to mid-May. Good Mahseer fishing localities

RAMGANGA:
The rippling bubbling waters of the Ramganga meander between two sub-Himalayan foothills from Khekiasaidi with a backdrop of stately dense chir and sal forests. The river abounds in the Mahseer, as well as the endangered gharial, and emerges through the hills at Kalagarh.

KOSI:
Passing through the districts of Almora and Nainital, the Kosi offers fishing for the golden Mahseer, Simon trout and the goonch. The area ranges from Khairna, passing through green fields on both sides of the river, via Betalghat on the Ranikhet- Ramnagar road, down to Garjia.

SARJU SARDA:
In eastern Almora district. Offers magnificent fishing from Kapkote down to Tanakpur. The best spots are Rameshwar and the bloom at Baramdeo.
